we.CONECT: What is key to a successful knowledge management system?

Alana Cento: Understanding how employees work, the challenges they face with access and usage of knowledge, and building solutions accordingly. Also ensuring that these systems are connected to avoid siloed knowledge as much as possible.

we.CONECT: Why is it so tricky to find a way to store information in an enterprise?

Alana Cento: Content and data – especially unstructured – is growing faster than ever. Also the way employees work (and like to work) is changing rapidly. Information is no longer just sitting in a database waiting for people to find it. It is becoming much more complex.

we.CONECT: What do you see as the biggest challenge when it comes to organizing company knowledge?

Alana Cento: Managing the masses of content and ensuring it can be found by the people who need it.

we.CONECT: How to create a great search experience for the users?

Alana Cento: Create an iterative approach and do lots of user testing so that you can adapt your search tools to the way your users work.

we.CONECT: How does a good search turn into tangible benefits for the organization?

Alana Cento: Employees should be able to quickly take action to deliver on business goals, such as solving customer issues quickly, reducing mistakes, and bringing products and solutions to market fast. This could be proven in the form of time saved or fewer errors product design costs. If you build search tools according to the results you’re looking to see, you will set yourself up for success.
