ScaleUp 360° ADAS Europe 2022 – Pre-Event Interview with Akka Technologies

The ScaleUp 360° Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Europe is the leading digital event on Development, Implementation & Deployment of Future Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. In 2 days of virtual sessions and case studies by leading technical ADAS R&D experts, the latest technological advances, use cases as well best practices for launching the next generation of ADAS functions and technologies are discussed. Learn, engage and discuss current and future tech innovations in real-time with 250+ thought leaders across the globe.

In the run-up to the event, we.CONECT spoke with Dr. Fedor Schreiber, Tech Line Leader – Automation AKKA Research at Akka Technologies about multimodular transformation of new vehicle generations & his ADAS visions.

Dr. Fedor Schreiber, Tech Line Leader – Automation AKKA Research, Akka Technologies

we.CONECT: Hello Mr. Schreiber – we’re happy to have that interview with you & to get some new insights. So, you work as Tech Line Leader – Automation AKKA Research at Akka Technologies – Would you like to briefly introduce yourself and your current role to our readers?

Fedor Schreiber: Sure, my name is Fedor Schreiber. After studying «electrical engineering and information technology» and working for many years at the University of Duisburg-Essen, I joined AKKA Technologies. For one year now, I am head of the Tech Line «Automation» and therefore responsible for the research projects in the field of automation in Germany.

we.CONECT: That sounds very interesting, what are the top projects you are currently working on at Akka Technologies?

Fedor Schreiber: Of course, all our projects are equally favored. The most extensive project is the AORTA project. The acronym stands for Automated Formation of rescue Lanes for emergency vehicles through Intelligent Networking and autonomous driving technology. The project objective is to reduce travel time of emergency vehicles to their destination by highly automating the formation of the rescue lane.

we.CONECT: You will be presenting “Multimodular transformation of new vehicle generations using ROS2-BASED SW STACK” to us at this year’s ScaleUp 360° ADAS Europe next week. What was the idea behind the development of ROS2-BASED SW STACK?

Fedor Schreiber: The central idea is to create a modular SW platform for autonomous driving which enables the automation of practically any types of vehicles – cars, trucks, buses, trains, vessels etc.

we.CONECT: What are the biggest benefits for customers in this context?

Fedor Schreiber: Due to the mentioned modularity of the platform, I would say the biggest benefit is tool consistency, as already developed solutions can be reused for the most part, which in turn reduces time and costs respectively. Further, we have extensive knowledge in complex turnkey solutions. Together with our innovative solutions from the research department, AKKA creates a strong all-round package.

we.CONECT: Where do you see the main challenges for the future? And what is Akka’s strategy to overcome these challenges?

Fedor Schreiber: In the context of autonomous driving, the biggest challenge, in my opinion, is not the technical character, but the social one. Only by successively increasing safety, comfort, and trust in AD solutions the social maturity of the technology can be brought to the necessary level. We are working with different universities, institutions, and further stakeholder on this topic.

we.CONECT: Can you describe your personal vision of the future of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems? What trends do you expect to see? What are you looking forward to?

Fedor Schreiber: In my vision, sometime in the future, such terms as “Advanced Driver Assistance Systems” or “Fully Autonomous Driving” will disappear, because these will be part of normal everyday life.

we.CONECT: We are very pleased to have you as a speaker at the event. Since Akka Technologies have been business partner at many of our AD & ADAS events in the past, what are your most important expectations for ScaleUp 360° ADAS Europe 2022? And why would you recommend our readers to join as well?

Fedor Schreiber: First of all, thank you very much for the opportunity to be a part of this conference. Due to the successful combination of constructive organization, innovative topics as well as the strong participants I especially look forward to interesting presentations as well as discussions. I can only recommend joining this fascinating conference.

we.CONECT: Thank you for the interview!
